When is government too big to understand or comprehended?
The Federal Register is a daily journal of the United States Government. This records the actions underway by the Federal government agencies that participate. How can a citizen reasonably know, understand, and effectively provide feedback and oversight of the government actions. It is impossible. To add to this challenge, what is your State, Local, and City Governments doing also?
According to USAfacts.org, as of September 2023, there were roughly 2.95 million employees. The vast majority of people employed are with the defense-military programs. The next largest employer is the Department of Veterans Affairs, followed by Department of Homeland Security.
Now, this shows the direct employees to the Federal Government. How many people work indirectly for the Federal Government. This could include those from Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), or sponsored institutions like schools or not-for-profits. More important, how many people are employed in a job which assists others with Federal, State, or Local Government compliance. For example, there are roughly 90,000 tax preparers supporting people to file their tax return. This does not include employees of companies preparing software and supporting services for those tax preparers.
